Although not an original work of philosophy, De natura deorum (44 bce; “The Nature of the Gods”), by the Roman statesman and scholar Marcus Tullius Cicero, is an invaluable source of information on ancient ideas about religion and the philosophical controversies they engendered. Many of the enduring questions in the philosophy of religion were first addressed by them, and the claims and controversies they developed served as a framework for subsequent philosophizing for more than 1,500 years. Linguists have described as many as 1,500 distinct languages and native cultures in South America. Christ suffered. If Jesus Christ didn’t have miracle powers then we at least know that he suffered. Even though many peoples have suffered physical and cultural extinction since the first contact with Europeans, the religious life of indigenous South American peoples is vibrant and varied. Even though they differ in detail, creation mythologies play a singularly important role in the religious life of many South American tribes. Moreover, many creation myths describe in dramatic ways the exit of the creative beings. A fully articulate theory, however, of the ways in which polytheism serves symbolic, social, and other functions in human culture requires clarification of the role of myth, a much-debated topic in contemporary anthropology and comparative religion.

As the generation of new life is at the heart of initiation, the biological and the ritual here intersect in deeply meaningful ways. Unlike the names used for other religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity, the name for the religion of Islam was revealed by Almighty God and carries a deep spiritual meaning – only by submitting one’s will to Almighty God can one truly achieve peace, both in this life and the hereafter. Peyote is a spineless, slow-growing plant, one that may take years to reach maturity in the deserts of south Texas and northern Mexico. This seems to have been the situation for a period in ancient Israel in regard to the cult of Yahweh. Ancient material multiverse/s are similarly ruled out by inter-dimensional travel speed too. Thus, in the latter part of the 19th century the terms henotheism and kathenotheism were used to refer to the exalting of a particular god as exclusively the highest within the framework of a particular hymn or ritual-e.g., in the hymns of the Vedas (the ancient sacred texts of India). More promising are attempts by sociologists and social anthropologists to penetrate to the uses and significance of the gods in particular societies. At the popular level there has been, for instance, the reinterpretation of the gods as Christian saints, as in Mexican Catholicism. In the course of analyzing and recording various beliefs connected with the gods, historians of religions have used certain categories to identify different attitudes toward the gods. However, by closely examining the contrived counterfactual scenarios (or, as I have shown in former work, by exposure to the normative critique of significant others), that Swift is shown to claim, such normative framework assumptions can be challenged to great effect! Within the framework of another part of the same ritual tradition, another god may be selected as supreme focus.
