The role of religion in the daily lives of Soviet citizens varied greatly, but two-thirds of the Soviet population were irreligious. Those questions may trouble us and hound us for our entire lives – but they are also an essential part of the human experience. Most Armenian Belgians are adherents of the Armenian Apostolic Church, with smaller numbers belonging to the Armenian Catholic Church or the Armenian Evangelical Church. According to Ipsos, 1% of the working-age, internet-connected Belgians declared that they believed in Confucianism. Despite that, one year later Ipsos found that 2% of the working-age, internet connected Belgians were Buddhists. Ipsos’ survey in 2016 found that Orthodox Christianity was the religion of about 1% of the working-age, internet connected Belgians. An online Ipsos survey conducted between 20 January and 3 February 2023 on a representative sample of Belgians aged 16 to 74 found that 47% had no religion, 44% was Christian, 4% was Muslim and 2% followed an other religion. Generally, as Hoffman’s (2011) survey shows, few statistically significant results have been identified which commentators attribute to opposing positive versus negative effects between and within individuals. However, the numbers of minority Muslim and non-Muslim groups have significantly declined over the past decades as people have fled sectarian tensions and conflict.

If the present crisis forces the non-Muslim world to choose sides between these religious models, the decision should be easy. However, government officials have the authority to research and monitor religious groups that are not officially recognised. There are significant Armenian communities that reside in Belgium, many of them are descendants of traders who settled during the 19th century. More work needs to be done to examine the intersections and collisions that occur due to the movement of communities (for example, the migration of Muslim communities to western countries) and highlight how these communities negotiate their religious experiences in new spaces. They are the framework of the Muslim life: faith, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able. Adherents to religions that are not officially recognized are not denied the right to practice their religion but do not receive state stipends. The Belgian constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. First Amendment to the United States Constitution, together with that Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause, form the constitutional right of freedom of religion. This service for others through the guidance of God is what a ministry adheres to, and that is the beauty of belonging in a congregation in which no one will judge you for what you have done and instead will give you a new start, a new chance to live life. These churches have not yet received official recognition. Official recognition means that priests (called “counselors” within the secular organizations) receive a state stipend.
