Nation of Islam
In 1930, claiming that he was Noble Drew Ali reincarnated, Fard founded the Nation of Islam in Detroit, Michigan, and designated his able assistant, Elijah Muhammad, originally Elijah Poole, to establish the Nation’s second centre in Chicago. This myth supported a program of economic self-sufficiency, the development of Black-owned businesses, and a demand for the creation of a separate Black nation to be carved out of the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. What role did Malcolm X play in the emergence of the Black Power movement? Nation of Islam, African American movement and organization, founded in 1930 and known for its teachings combining elements of traditional Islam with Black nationalist ideas. Their time was up in 1914, and the 20th century was to be the time for Black people to assert themselves. It reemerged at the beginning of the 20th century as a result of the efforts of the Aḥmadiyyah movement, an unorthodox sect founded in India by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (c. Islam was brought to the United States by enslaved African Muslims, and it retained a real if minuscule presence in the country throughout the 19th century. For Muslims, the concepts Dar al-Islam (Abode of Islam) and Dar al-Harb (Abode of War) serve most generally to differentiate Muslim spaces from non-Muslim spaces.
While Fard retired into obscurity, Elijah taught that Fard was a Prophet (in the Muslim sense) and a Saviour (in the Christian sense) and the very presence of Allah. Since the latter are not subject to Islamic governance, it was deemed incumbent upon Muslim rulers – specifically the Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphs who often continued the expansion begun by the Prophet Mohammad – to extend the Dar al-Islam vis-à-vis jihad. Elijah also encouraged his followers to drop their “slave” names in favour of Muslim names or, in most cases, an “X,” signifying that they had lost their identities in slavery and did not know their true names. Baalim and Ashtaroth are given as the collective names of the male and female demons (respectively) who came from between the “bordering flood of old Euphrates” and “the Brook that parts Egypt from Syrian ground”. From this cross-cultural syncretism emerged Serapis, a god who combined Osiris and Apis with characteristics of Greek deities, and who became very popular among the Greek population. According to ACS-Italia estimate, around 52% of Eritrea’s population in 2017 adhered to Islam, and 46% followed Christianity, with the remaining 2% of residents practicing other religions, including traditional faiths and animism.
Islam divides the world into the House of Islam, or the House of Submission where Sharia law rules, and the House of War, or lands that have not yet submitted to Islamic Sharia. Western nations will remain in the House of War until they are conquered. Suppressed during World War II for advocating that its followers refuse military service, the Nation rebounded in the 1950s after a charismatic young leader, Malcolm Little, better known as Malcolm X, took over the New York Temple. Freedom of religion has been granted to Icelandic citizens since 1874; the Church of Iceland is supported by the government, but all religions officially recognised in the state’s civil registry receive support from a church tax (sóknargjald) owed by their respective populations of adherents over the age of sixteen, who are counted by the state’s statistical office on a yearly basis; citizens who declare that they are not affiliated with any religion owe an equivalent tax to the University of Iceland. It is important to note that the objective of this jihad was not to forcibly convert non-believers to Islam, but to extend the jurisdiction of Islamic government, i.e. Dar al-Islam (Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World, entry: Dar al-Harb).
1839-1908), and of Shaikh Ahmed Faisal (1891-1980), the Moroccan-born leader of an independent Black Muslim movement. Elijah Muhammad believed that the white race was created by Yakub, a Black scientist, and that Allah had allowed this devilish race to hold power for 6,000 years. Elijah also borrowed from traditional Islamic behavioral practices, including the refusal to eat pork or to use tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs. When problems erupted in the Detroit headquarters in 1934, Elijah Muhammad stepped in and took control. Muhammad provided what Fard lacked-strong leadership and a coherent theology. Dar al-harb could be “civilized” such as the Byzantine empire – it just had not submitted to God’s will as defined in terms of Islamic theology and jurisprudence. When you look at it that way, the meaning of the koan is clear,” says Heine. “The master is saying, you’re so eager that you’re missing the forest for the trees.
