Those seconds or (God forbid) minutes at the start of the day can feel like an eternity. It sounded like classical music. Religion and culture seem like complex ideas to study from the perspective of International Relations. While the idea of culture has equally been underplayed in IR, its inclusion in analyses of world affairs predates that of religion and is considered less controversial. After all, scholars and philosophers have long debated the meaning of these terms and the impact they have had on our comprehension of the social world around us. One should refrain from interpreting this incident as the mythic rendering of an antagonistic struggle between divine principles or between two religious factions practicing and opposing human sacrifice.

It’s just not one that I don’t share. Nacxitl or Acxitl is one of the names of Quetzalcoatl, according to central Mexican sources. The creation myth recorded at length in the Popol Vuh is generally considered an adaptation of central Mexican (Toltec) prototypes: here, the creation of the world in various stages of completion is referred to as the work of Tepeu and Cucumatz (Gucumatz). The allusion of the source to Quetzalcoatl as already present in Cholollan seems to indicate that well before the fall of Tollan the god’s cult had begun to spread, certainly fostered by “Toltec” groups, into wider parts of central Mexico. Only a few characteristic elements common to various facets of “Toltec” religion can be singled out so far: a supreme deity, Quetzalcoatl, who gave his name to priests and rulers; a cult dominated by eagles and jaguars (i.e., the warriors); a ritual ball game as reenactment of cosmic processes; and the importance of human sacrifice. Their world view might be called “polydeism:” there are many gods, but they are merely superhuman beings; they are remote, uninvolved in the world, posing no threat and offering no hope to human beings. There are persons who do not believe in God, and they are reasonable in doing so.

As a result, many people are now familiar with the geography of many areas of interests. Any person familiar with both literatures will know that the Bible does not contain a discernible fraction of the precise spiritual instructions that can be found in the Buddhist canon. This will be the case on accounts of the evidential ambiguity of theism that take the ambiguity to hold in principle, ruling out any possibility of evidential disambiguation. You cannot begin to know what next step to take in your life without Him. Details of his origin, genealogy, and life are contradictory. Seeing then that we’re not our own, it’s not up to us to decide when our lives on earth are over, it’s up to the Lord. The god is referred to in the Nahuatl text as Quetzalcoatl Nacxitl Tepeuhqui and is addressed as Tloque’ Nahuaque’ (Lord of Proximity and Vicinity), the omnipresent deity. Huemac, too, assumed divinity, as lord of the underworld. After his departure from Xicocotitlan, Topiltzin was replaced by a more secular ruler, Huemac, perhaps Topiltzin’s kinsman, who himself was also persecuted by the demons and who finally fled to a cave where he killed himself or disappeared-the sources are hopelessly contradictory on this point.

Topiltzin was eventually overthrown, and consequently one disaster after the other befell his city. Despite his many roles, the one he is known the best for is definitely his role as Preston Burke in “Grey’s Anatomy.” However, he was let go from the show (and essentially blacklisted by Hollywood) after using a homophobic slur about a castmate. If you are new to fasting or have specific dietary needs or restrictions, starting with a partial fast may be the best option for you. Faith in the religion is noticeable in dress, dietary codes, regular prayers and language. Yet, many scholars now hold that religion cannot be ignored. Scholars assume that the Nonoalca migrated from the southern Veracruz region, where they had been in contact with a more sophisticated civilization, which would explain their opinion of themselves and of Quetzalcoatl as the incarnation of cultural superiority. Either way, the aim is simple: Draw enough attention to a message, convince enough people of your cause’s moral superiority and you can change the way a government, industry or society acts and thinks. How can we define religion and culture in a way that is useful to the study of world politics?
