Islam was present in Italy during the Middle Ages, though it disappeared until the 20th century; Islam is not currently recognized as an official religion, though 3.7% of Italians are Muslim.
Between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, a distinct form of Islamic thought and practice developed among Muslim trading communities of the Indian Ocean. Many are immigrants from Albania and Morocco, though Muslim immigrants to Italy also come from all over Africa, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. During the early Middle Ages, the Arabs conquered Mediterranean territories across northern Europe, Spain, and into Sicily and southern Italy. Some neopagan movements, especially in Europe, have adopted ethnic religion as their preferred term, aligning themselves with ethnology. Christianity has been present in Italy for at least 2000 years, predated by forms of animism and polytheism similar to that of Greece.
In recent years, the population of Protestant Christians has grown rapidly and dramatically as a result of increased missionary work, especially in rural communities. Just under 5% of the population of Thailand practice Islam, and of that 5%, a majority identify as Sunni. Sectarian tensions are mounting in Iraq as the newly ascendant Shia majority struggles to accommodate the Sunni minority and deal with the Kurdish Regional Government in the north of the country while confronting extremist Sunni groups. While it holds significant spiritual value, it is not confined to any one tradition. Mahayana Buddhism differs from Theravada Buddhism in that the spiritual focus is less academic and less solitary.
