What Ancient Greeks Knew About Religion That You Still Don’t
Religion in Greece is dominated by Christianity, in particular the Greek Orthodox Church, which is within the larger communion of the Eastern Orthodox Church. While many of the early Greek philosophers, up to and including Socrates, either did not record their thoughts or wrote books and essays that were destroyed, the philosophers from the time of Plato onward did leave books of their teachings. With Socrates (469-399 bce), Greek philosophy entered a new period. To many in the region – writers, singers, poets, just plain folk – they are a harbinger, mostly of no good. Some long-held bird beliefs even manage to contradict one another, giving a species a lucky aura in one region and an air of wickedness in others.
