Iran gives the ulema much more influence and also has a religious police. While the ruling kings (and Crown Princes) of Saudi Arabia “have historically stayed away from religion”, and “outsourced” issues of theology and religious law to “the big beards”, (traditionally conservative and orthodox religious scholars), MbS has “a law degree from King Saud University”. However, the third head of the House of Saud used the title “Imam”, and Saudi kings have served in this role since.

Historians note that in his alliance with the House of Saud, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab called for the state to have an “imam” (religious leader, himself) and an “emir” (military leader, Ibn Saud). Many have become angry with God because so little change has occurred in their circumstances.
